LavatoryA turning space under a lavatory has advantages. LAVATORY DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS—Knee and Toe Space, typical guidelines. Lavatory In an Alcove. Lavatory Next to a Water Closet, minimum distance. Fixture Next to a Water Closet. Lavatory Next To A Bathing Fixture, bathtub, roll-in shower without seat, bathing fixture with seat, transfer shower, alternate shower with seat. Maneuvering In and Maneuvering Out from a lavatory. Overlapping Spaces. LAVATORY DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS (continued)—A lavatory's forward approach clear floor space, 30 inches in width by 48 inches in depth (762 x 1219 mm), is centered on the lavatory. The approach clear floor space, in concert with knee clearance, allows a person to keep both hands forward while the lavatory is being used. A turning space under a lavatory also has an advantage. It provides maneuvering space near an adjacent fixture that a cabinet, countertop and sink cannot provide. Knee clearance beneath a lavatory is illustrated on page 132. LAVATORY—Typical Guidelines KNEE AND TOE SPACE—Typical Guidelines LAVATORY IN AN ALCOVE—Forward Approach: An alcove, with a forward approach, that is more than 24 inches (610 mm) deep is 36 inches (914 mm) minimum in width. Parallel Approach—An alcove, with a parallel approach, that is more than 15 inches (381 mm) wide is 60 inches (1524 mm) minimum in depth. LAVATORY NEXT TO A WATER CLOSET—Minimum Distance: Although a locality may permit a lavatory's edge 18 inches (457 mm) minimum from the centerline of a water closet when a water closet has the larger clear floor space detailed below, the general rule is, minimum widths and depths should be increased in size wherever space permits. This includes the space between a lavatory and a water closet. A lavatory is permitted on the 30 inch end adjacent to a bathtub's control wall. A lavatory is permitted on the 30 inch end adjacent to a bathtub's control wall. LAVATORY NEXT TO A BATHING FIXTURE—Roll-in Shower without Seat: A roll-in shower's clear floor space is 30 inches (762 mm) minimum in width. A lavatory is permitted on the 30 inch end opposite a roll-in shower without seat's end wall controls. LAVATORY NEXT TO A BATHING FIXTURE—Bathing Fixture with Seat: Both a bathtub with permanent seat and a roll-in shower with seat have, at minimum, a 30 inch (762 mm) wide clear floor space. A lavatory is permitted on the 30 inch end opposite a roll-in shower's seat and the 30 inch end opposite a bathtub's permanent seat. LAVATORY NEXT TO A BATHING FIXTURE—Transfer Shower: A lavatory should neither overlap a transfer shower's clear floor space nor obstruct a turn in and away from that clear floor space. LAVATORY NEXT TO A BATHING FIXTURE—Alternate Shower with Seat: A lavatory cannot obstruct an alternate shower's entry. Overlapping Spaces—Turning space and clear floor space can overlap.
